Oscar Predictions – Pipped at the post Sandy Powell Takes Best Costume Design Rania Salibi and Jenna Hurt Win Designer Challenge

Category : Celebrity, Designer

Well you win some, you lose some.  Unfortunately, we lost both our oscar flutters. We backed ‘Nine’ to win best costume design, but two time winner, Sandy Powell, became 3 time winner for her amazing period designs in The Young Victoria – we were torn between the two films though – honestly we were!! We should have known when she won the BAFTA! Here’s Sandy’s winning speech – oh Sandy we love your dress!!

Then Rania Salibi won the designer challenge competition and we never even saw that coming.  Jenna Hurt, the amazingly statuesque model became the onstage escort and looked elegant in the strapless, black and ivory tube dress.  Congratulations to them both. (We still preferred our choice (miaow) but never mind). Watch Carson Kressley’s comments on the winning dress at this link – you can’t seee this video any where else.

Road to the Oscars March 7th – Best Costume Design Nominations

Category : Celebrity, Designer

Take a look at the Oscar nominees for best costume design. Starting from the top Sandy Powell (8 previous nominations – 2 wins for Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator) for The Young Victoria, Monique Prudhomme (1st time nomination) for The Imaginarrium of Dr Parnussus, Catherine Leterrier (first time nomination) for Coco before Chanel , Janet Patterson (4 previous nominations) for Bright Star and last but not least, Colleen Atwood (8 previous nominations – 2 wins for Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha) for sexy, italian, sensation, Nine. Now, usually we have a flutter, but this one is sooo difficult.

We know the academy like a period drama so we’re tempted to go for Young Victoria or Bright Star. The costumes in Coco before Chanel have influenced the whole fashion world since it’s release, The Imaginarium is wildly creative and Nine is just wild. The number of period dresses, in Young Victoria are unbelievable. But gut feeling is making us lean towards the bustier bursting, sultry,  60s glamour of Nine - ok that’s what we’ll go for.  Go on have a bet with us – leave your comments please. Road to the Oscars March 7 – Designer Challenge 2010

Category : Celebrity, Designer, Video, Women

Designers from across the US have been submitting their sketches, with the hope of having their original gown, showcased by a gorgeous model, ( undertaking the job of onstage escort) at the 82nd Oscars ceremony this Sunday 7th March.

Well the hundreds of sketches were wittled down to just nine – the models have been selected, the gowns have been made, the votes have been cast, and the winner will be announced during the live Oscars Pre-Show this Sunday. The video above gives you a little sneaky peak of how the dresses look on the catwalk and we’ve pictured all nine below. Click to see a clearer image.

If you want the whole low down on the designers, the models and the judging you can watch the fabulous Behind the dress series hosted by Queer eye for the straight Guy’s Carson Kressley. Each dress has an individual catwalk video so that you can really make up our minds.

Which one would you go for? Shall we have a little bet?  TFG are scared to put their money down – we just can’t pick one dress they all have something special. We’ve narrowed it down to three Fernanda Carneiro’s elegantly simple but so beautiful black, backless gown with crystals at the waist, Ari Sheuhmelian’s ruffled, black bustier topped piece which descends into grey ombre shades and wonderful folds, or Oday Shaker’s silver, one shouldered, sari inspired creation which creates such a tall and statuesque sillhouette (is that the dress or the model – probably both). Ok one dress (but we love them all)!! Ok we’ll go for Ari Scheumelian.  Let us have your comments. By the way the offical Oscars site is just fab.

The April issue of Red Magazine hits the shelves today, featuring it’s list of 20 red hot women under 30 – influential young women from the worlds of busiess, entertainment, politics, fashion and more, who are working hard to shape our futures. Of course, at TFG we were keen to see, who from the world of fashion had made the list and found fashion blogger and style icon, Susanna Lau, alongside innovative, knitwear designer, Louise Goldin.

Being nosy, as we are, we asked for a little insider info – and this is what we found out

THE STYLE GURU – SUSANNA LAU, 26, FASHION BLOGGER

Who?Creator of fashion blog Style Bubble, Lau’s loveable tone and quirky style (she regularly tries on new purchases for all her readers to see) has earned her a massive following.

Why? Not only does her online diary get 300,000 unique users a month, it also landed her a day job with online Dazed & Confused. Despite the fact Lau could be making big money from such
a successful blog, she only occasionally takes advertising because,
‘I don’t want to turn
the blog into a living.’

What they’re saying: ‘One of the blogosphere’s biggest fashion icons,’ says the Telegraph

LOUISE GOLDIN, 29, FASHION DESIGNER

Who? Knitwear designer, whose debut collection was exclusively ordered
by Selfridges in 2005, has gone on to collaborate with Topshop and cashmere label Ballantyne.

Why? Goldin has won the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in 2008, the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Forward award in 2009 and received BFC sponsorship to exhibit at London fashion weeks S/S and A/W 2010. Take a look at Louise’s Spring 2010 collection here.

What they’re saying: ‘Louise has created innovation in a field that can sometimes feel quite safe,’ says Red’s fashion & creative director, Nicola Rose.

Congratulations to all, on amazing achievements. Read the full story, and find out who else is nominated in this month’s Red magazine.

Mytights.com helping out London Fashion Week And Our Waistlines

Category : Accessories, Designer, Lingerie, Sponsored, Trends, Women

Designers at London Fashion Week have called on specialist hosiery website mytights.com to cover the long legs of the models on their catwalks. The site certainly has the multitude of styles, shapes and colours to compliment any outfit.  Apparently the stylists have called for lots of lace, backseams and fish nets, as well as matte black and coloured opaques, sparkly tights, ankle & knee high socks and soft woollen tights.

In the past few days we’ve seen Vivien Westwood’s show featuring matte opaques in bright oranges, yellows and reds, alongside knee high woollen socks in cerise pinks. Top Shop Unique’s quirky show had girls strutting up and down in soft, woolly cable numbers for autumn 2010 (remember Alexa Chung in her grey marl tights at Chanel earlier in the year?) So if you want to be ahead of the game right now check out mytights.com’s soft, ribbed wool tights with merino and cashmere – yes woolly tights have come along way, since those school uniform days!!  Shows by Henry Holland and Clements Ribeiro have gone for lighter, patterned, trasparent styles in blacks, greys and pastel shades.  If this is more your style take a look at mytights.com Transparenze range which will take you, right on trend, into spring.

Finally, if you’d like the toned stomach, flat bottom and pulled in waistline of a model(well almost) without spending anytime dieting or pounding the treadmills you need to invest in spanx. These are the wonder invention of Sarah Blakely -  bodyshaping hosiery, which will banish VPL and give you a gorgeously toned, smooth and streamlined look. Sarah originally desgined footless, control hosiery to wear with light coloured trousers, now the range includes slips, pants, tights, body suits – in fact all the styles and colourtones that will give you the confidence to wear any outfit this coming spring and summer. Once you discover mytights.com you will never go onto the highstreet to shop for hosiery again – they have everything your legs desire!
