V & A Celebrate Ethical Fashion Day…

To help celebrate Ethical Fashion Day the Victoria and Albert Museum took exchanging fashions with friends to the next level – Cut and Sew construction workshops were conducted to help the attendees get new life out of old clothes. The day was dedicated to making wise fashion choices and practicing the practical, ethical fashion model.

In light of curent times and the need to be more thrifty and enviro freindly Tanya Greenwood has started a label in Australia under the name Handcut which harks back to the 1930s and ’40s, when women made do by renovating their clothes from whatever they had to hand.

You can get frocks made from pinstriped jackets and floral bed linen, jackets from vintage corduroy and the panelled denim skirts are sewn from at least three pairs of jeans. These mixed-up designer clothes are known as “refashioned originals” – which is a polite way of saying they are made from landfill.

Greenwood is whimsical about the history on her clothing racks. “I like to wonder what sort of bloke wore this before,” she says, holding a jacket with shimmering sleeves. “He must have been so cool with his gold jacket on.”

Rags 2 Riches

This website Rags2Riches are teaming up with the impoverished people of Philippines’ and getting some of the countries fashion designers (Rajo Laurel is the first one so far) to help improve the area’s standard of living.

The whole site offers designer accessories based entirely on recycled materials.

At the moment they can only be purchased in Manilla’s high end stores however they are expecting to hit New York, San Francisco, Tokyo as well as certain cities in Europe and Australia really soon.

Also keep an eye on the official site too as it’s expected to open its doors for online retail.

Tesco Designer Shopper by Cath Kidston..

Tesco have teamed up with homeware designer Cath Kidston to produce an eco-friendly re-usable bag that will help raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The bags, which will be available from July in six different designs will retail at £3.50, with 50p from every sale donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care neither Tesco nor Cath Kidston are profiting from the sale of the bags..
