Shades of grey’, ‘a bit muddy’, ‘more 1970s than the 1970s’ and ‘under whelming’ just a few comments I’ve read today about the relaunch of the Halston label in New York. The thing is people don’t want the 70s as it really was, they want a romanticised version of it and apparently this collection just wasn’t doing that – I must admit those dusky purple stay-pressed flares and that brown roll neck jumper are so authentic, I swear I saw my Aunty Wendy wearing them at her 21st in 1975! (Hey she looked great)!

I think there’s some really elegant, wearable stuff in there, I like the suede boots, the sleek silky overcoats, the light weight, floaty gowns and jersey dresses and the ultra-thin knits. The tight crotches and super-girl capes are really funky too but you probably have to be a super-model to get away with those.

Liza Minelli was in the audience, in vintage Halston, but apparently Rachel Zoe stayed away – I don’t know what that’s telling us. The overall message to Marco Zanini, Harvey Weinstein, Tamara Mellon and the rest of the team appears to be give us the 70s but give us a contemporary, funky 70s and lets have it in colour. Take a look at all the photos at ElleUK, then tell us what you think.

And – just as they said it would, it happened – 24 hours after the show Net-a-Porter will sell you the following items.
